South Africa: Angolan president reiterates call for BRICS' assistance

Johannesburg, ANGOLA, July 27 - Angolan head of State João Lourenço has called on BRICS to help Angola overcome the existing constraints to ensure the country's economic development, progress and people’s well-being. ,

 

João Lourenço made the appeal Friday at the meeting between BRICS and African countries’ leaders held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

The president said that Angola has made a great effort in national reconstruction field, adding that the country still need to work to meet the growing demands of populations and businesses.

 

The Statesman recalled that the country has recently started a new political cycle.

 

He added that the Government intends to continue  deepening the democratic process and implement macroeconomic stabilisation programmes to reduce the effects of inflation.

 

The president also referred to the government intention to standardise the exchange market, improve the business environment and combat corruption and impunity.

 

João Lourenço recalled that alike the African countries, BRICS also experienced the same stage of economic and social development during their historic trajectory, but they managed to make decisive move toward industrialisation.

 

The President is attending for the first time the meeting of the World’s five main emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

 

 

Angolan statesman noted that African countries could go through stages and shorten the path of progress and development, following the BRICS example.

 

"We believe that in the current context of globalization and information and communication technologies, our countries will be able to go through steps, thus shortening the path of progress and development," he stressed.

 

In another aspect of his speech, João Lourenço defended creation of the internal conditions of security and democratic stability.

 

According to him, the aim is to attain the sustainable development of the countries of the region.

 

The President said the internal conditions will allow a concerted strategy of inclusive growth, fight against hunger, reducing the unemployment rate, housing development, improve the people's living conditions and the creation of partnerships for the integration and industrialisation of the entire southern region.

 

"We are aware that the collaboration between BRICS and Africa may result in inclusive societies and global partnership in the interest of all humanity", underlined the President.

          

According to him, the BRICS can also, through the economic and financial institutions they intend to set up, help reinforce the trend towards a world where decisions are taken in an increasingly multilateral, balanced and fair manner.

        

João Lourenço also said that the areas of cooperation proposed by the Presidency of South Africa reveal well the breadth and depth of the issues discussed at the 10th BRICS Summit.

 

 

Such areas range from peacekeeping to gender issues and a new strategy of economic cooperation to the new information and communication technologies,

 

The president believes that boosting the strategy for Africa's economic partnership with the BRICS, in the perspective of inclusive growth and shared prosperity with the progress of the 4th Industrial Revolution, can effectively enhance sustainable development.

 

He insisted that the strategy can also boost economic inclusion, state reform, good governance, modernisation and de-bureaucratization of public services, as well as the emergence of the digital economy and e-government.

     

Meanwhile, the president stressed the country's plan to take advantage of the potential of ICTs in their economic, social, cultural and environmental dimension, which, according to him,  turns the telecommunications into driving force for economic development in general.

 

Prior to addressing a plenary, that marked the last day of 10th BRICS Summit, João Lourenco held a meeting with the China's President, Xi Jinping.

 

On Thursday, the Angolan Head of State met with Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin (at his request), and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

 

The president was also due to meet on Friday with the Turkish counterpart, Recep Erdogan, at his request.
